With a specific gravity of 4.1, BAROID® 41 weighting agent, ground barium sulfate meets the API Specifications 13A, Section 2, for drilling fluid barite. BAROID 41 weighting agent can be used to increase densities of oil-based and water-based drilling fluids to 21 lb/gal (2516 kg/m3).
The American Petroleum Institute (API) has established specifications for the use of barite in drilling mud. To meet these specifications, the barite is finely ground so that at least 97% of the material, by weight, can pass through a 200-mesh (75-μm) screen, and no more than 30%, by weight, can be less than 6 μm diameter.
Solids Adjustment (Oil Water Muds) This program calculates the material requirements for decreasing % solids at a constant oil to water ratio and density for oil muds.
