Dec 14, 2018 Properties of Clay Soil. Though different soils have a wide range of colors, textures and other distinguishing features, there are only three types of soil particles that geologists consider distinct.
Silt particles are between 0.05 mm and 0.002 mm and feel like flour. Clay particles are smaller than 0.002 mm and cannot be seen with the unaided eye. Because of the small particle size, clay soils can sometimes experience large amounts of expansion and contraction in volume with changes in moisture content.
Two (ML4 and NR1) of the five samples that failed on compressive strength testing had smooth particles implying that particles sizes play some role in concrete compressive strength. It is noted that 3 (KB2, KT1 and KW1) of the failed samples that portrayed rough and irregular particles had higher silt and clay content of more than 8%.
